Design Pack Stuff

Ya first post! here is some stuff I drew up for the design pack, I covered the monster, the bug, camera flashes, the "can-non" camera, pillar designs and orb lights and podiums. If you think they are ok I will get some clean up done on them for better scan quality.

Storyboard Meetings

Hey everyone,

Sorry I'm a bit late with this one. We've all been pretty busy with our boards, and I think we've gotten some really good work done. We didn't discuss much of major importance in the meetings this week b/c we were focusing on getting the boards done, but here's the highlights.

On Monday we agreed on basic designs for Ted, Judith, and the monster. On Friday we assembled the completed boards, turned them in to Natalie, and got a feel for who wants to do what for the reel.

Here's a rough breakdown of everyone's preferences for reel work:

SFX - Kyle, Hosung, Ban
Music - Kyle, Adric, Ban, Vince
Foley/Voice Recording - Kal, Daphne, Adric
Video Editing - Mike, Martin, Harry, Anita

We'll need to figure out a feasible workflow for making sure each subgroup is getting things done and transferred to the other groups for approval/use. I think having a meeting on Monday to clear that up would be best. Also, the boards for the fight sequence are not flowing together as well as they should be. We need to go over those boards and decide what parts work and what parts need to be changed so we can get that nailed down asap.

Week 10 Meetings

Hello everybody,

It's that time again. Here's the really important info that everyone needs to know: Cleaned up storyboards are due this coming Friday. The combined total must be the entire film, and each group member must submit a minimum of 9 panels. *OUR PERSONAL GROUP DEADLINE FOR THE BOARDS IS THIS WEDNESDAY.* I want to make sure we get everything done well before we need it so we can look over and tweak things as needed without waiting til the last minute.

We have broken down the boards into new workloads to be finished for Wednesday. Here is the current list of assignments:

Ban – walking thru jungle up til stairs, inside/outside of stairs shot.
Anita – cleaning up and refining her original sequence.
Kal – going to cleanup his sequence and add the counter.
Vince - cleaning up and refining his original sequence.
Martin – ted meets the monster thru finding the camera.
Daph – ted finding camera thru ted taking final shot against monster
Adric – death of monster thru explosion of orb. (maybe wave of souls and soul into Judith)

THIS IS IMPORTANT: If your name is missing, then you weren't at the meeting to choose your sequence assignment. Contact me to work out what you should be doing. If your original sequence does not overlap any of the already assigned work, then you'll most likely be finishing up what you've done so far. If your work does overlap, then we will need to contact whoever your work will be overlapping with to work out what parts of that sequence you will be doing.

With that out of the way, here's what happened this week:
In our meeting with Mark, we went over the boards and his suggestions on how to improve what we were doing.
In our meeting with Tony, we discussed narrowing down character designs and running them by DQ. We also did a group evaluation on how we're doing on a number of criteria. We scored well on trust, but we can make improvements as far as clarity of goals, listening, feedback, and decision making go. For clarity of goals we talked about the ideas of providing official group agreement on goals, getting opinions from each group member, and delegating decision making power to competent sub-groups. We discussed how listening is a matter of respect, and that not listening is both disrespectful and calls into question the validity of having group meetings. We agreed that we all need to work on giving feedback. We need to be able to take criticism professionally, but we should also seek it out instead of waiting for it to be delivered. Finally, we talked about the need for enthusiasm for the project. Instead of waiting for other people to get excited about what we're doing, we need to get into the project and do work to inspire our teammates.

In our group meeting on Thursday we went over each of the character's identities, some ideas for how the fight and credits would progress, and the need for working out more focused designs for the characters, environment, and new props.
In our group meeting on Friday we pitched our boards to Natalie, who gave us some good feedback on where we need to go. She was wondering if the beginning felt a bit too light-hearted, and that we should probably play up Ted and Judith's relationship in the opening. She also said we should introduce the basic concept of the temple as a prison for the monster very early on, probably as dialog from Ted showing off to Judith. She presented the idea that the two characters are both photographers, which would play along better with the idea that Ted doesn't really have any idea what he's doing. After Natalie left, we divided the boards up among those who had shown up for the meeting.

We've got a lot of good work going for us, and the boards are shaping up well. We've got a lot of big deadlines coming up back to back, and I think that if we keep up this level of work, we'll be fine.

Temple statue room

well. this is just a concept for a statue room and demon i came up with...

FunPack!

Hey guys,

We've got the funpack due Friday, so I made a list of the things we need to have for it. Keep in mind that the quality level is whatever will be useful as an aid in storyboarding our scenes.

If there's anything else you think we need, throw it in. The rule of thumb is this: if you try doing a few storyboards, and have to make something new to put in the boards, put it in the funpack.

Reading Week Meeting

Alrighty, here's the original write-up of my story idea, like I promised. It's pretty rough and needs some work, so feel free to leave comments on how you think it should be improved and edited.

Ted is an explorer with his girlfriend/wife, Judith. As they're heading through the jungle, they stumble upon a temple overgrown by a massive tree. He carefully explores the outside of the temple, but Judith, being overly curious, rushes right in to the darkened entrance. Ted is afraid to go in b/c he doesn't know what's inside, and because it's very dark. He calls for his Judith, and she yells back for him to come quick.
Ted makes his way into the temple, stumbling through the darkness. After a ways, he finds his way lit by glowing crystals embedded in the wall carvings. He turns a corner to see Judith enter into a cavernous room. Its roof has been cracked by the roots of the tree, and sunlight trickles in from above.
At the far side is a large, monstrous, statue holding a glowing orb with a pulsing black center. Judith, entranced by the orb, reaches for it. From the other side of the room Ted yells for her to stop, but she doesn't hear him. As she touches it, the doors of the room slam down, the light from the roof disappears, and green fire from braziers circling the room light up.
The orb begins to glow as it absorbs Judith's life force. She drops to the ground, and the statue's eyes light up. Ted runs over to her as it slowly begins to move, placing the orb into a socketed cavity in its chest. He grabs her body, and runs towards the doors. When the orb locks into place, the stone covering the monster falls, revealing its true form as a shadow being. The orb sinks into the shadow's chest, glowing weirdly from within.
Ted hammers on the door, trying to get out, but it's solid rock. The shadow starts stomping towards him, so he pulls a gun out of his pack. It gets closer, and Ted fires at it, and the shots punch gaping holes that quickly refill with darkness. The monster pauses, roars, and swipes large chunks of rubble at Ted.
Ted ducks behind cover, avoiding the rocks, but he's left Judith's body defenseless, and the shadow has made that his new target. He jumps up and runs out of cover, trying to attract the monster's attention. It turns back towards him, and he shoots at it again. One of his shots nicks the orb as it passes through. The orb flashes brightly, and the monster falls to its knees. It lumbers over to Ted and grabs him up. It lifts him to its face, but Ted frees his arms and shoots a hole through its head. It drops him, clawing at where its head ways, blinded until it reforms.
Ted stumbles when he lands, but sees that the monster is vulnerable, so he unloads his gun at the orb, finally shattering it. The orb explodes with a blinding light, obliterating the shadow and extinguishing the braziers. When the light fades, the room has returned to normal, the door grinds open, and Ted picks himself off the ground. He rushes over to Judith's body and holds her close to him. Suddenly, she draws a breath and opens her eyes, and Ted is ecstatic. “What happened? How'd I get here?” “You wouldn't believe me if I told you.” Ted chuckles, helps her up. He spots a shine where the monster was standing, and walks over. In the remains of the orb is a good-sized jewel. He picks it up, gives it to Judith, and they walk out of the temple.

Obviously, I'm missing the proposal idea, as well as Kyle's much-improved ending. Otherwise, I think it's a pretty solid base.

Week 7 Meetings

Hi everyone,

On Wednesday, we were still preparing our pitch pack, so after briefly going over it with Mark, we spent the rest of the break polishing that.

On Thursday we did group and self-evaluations, then went over the results from the pitch presentation. Daphne stepped down as story supervisor, and Kal has replaced her. We discussed some potential ideas with which to improve the story, then watched a video on words of wisdom from people in the industry.

On Friday we again went over the pitch presentation comment sheets. Kal explained a clearer view of our goals for the story, and we spent some time brainstorming a premise for the film. We have decided that we want to focus on the Action Cliche Comedy tone of the film, and that we are going to take reading week to go back and develop who we want Ted to be as a person, so we can then re-build the story around him.

I will be typing up and summarizing the pitch presentation comment sheets so that the info is readily available and easy to read. I'll send that out at a later date.

Quick Update

Hey everyone,

I'll post the minutes from this past week's meetings later, but I would like to make everyone aware that we're trying to organize a meeting some time over reading week. We'll be going over character directions for Ted, as well as watching some movies for inspiration. If everyone could email me their availability this week and/or post it as a comment here, I can get a meeting arranged.

Pitch Pack - The Story Beats

Hey dudes and dudettes!

Here's what I've got as far as the pitch pack is concerned. Six pages of story beats! Read from Left>Right. WHEE!

After showing him the template, Adric advised adding a faint light screen to its visual elements, that way the yellowy colors are not so overwhelming and the text/actual images stand out more.

joo like?

(Yes, I'm fully aware that certain things are a whee bit cropped out. It's the Photoshop grey, no need to worry.)

Another template... joo like?

Just a more refined design of the template, yo.

Temple Props

Concepts continued

Here's another, a play on Anita's very kick ass designs.

As you can see this is a more painterly interpretation, with less Mignola-esque cell shading.

Temple Concepts

Here's a temple concept for the design pack.

Kind of Mignola inspired, but with less stark black shading.
This can be altered later to suit the tone. More straight Aztec/Mayan ziggurat in style. Credit goes to Vince for the statues.

Week 7 Monday Meeting and Pitch Pack Status

Hi everyone,

Here's the news for this week: Pitch to whole year on Wednesday in Mark's Lecture. We're schedule 3rd. This is non-negotiable. Also, you must submit your artwork to Daphne and Adric no later than Tuesday afternoon. This will allow for time to do final assembly and proofing.

And here's the minutes for today's meeting:

We went over what everyone had ready for today, then discussed whatever issues had arisen since the last meeting about what was needed or what direction we were going. We also decided to go with the celebration ending idea for the time being, though a number of us are more partial to some of the sillier endings we came up with. We can discuss those options in a later meeting.

This is where everyone stands for their pitch pack work as of this meeting:

Harry, Ban, and Anita have submitted their work for the pack, and Harry is doing some additional concepts for the altar and altar-room.
Kal, Vince, and Daphne are finalizing the beat panels.
Hosung and Martin are finalizing character designs.
Adric and Daphne have preliminary template designs, which will be finalized after collecting materials from everyone.
Mike and Kyle are unaccounted for.

Again, I stress that all work that is not submitted must be so by tomorrow afternoon. If you don't have your work submitted by then, it's going to be a lot harder to squeeze it into the final product. Please be punctual.

Quick template mockup

I just threw together a quick template to get an idea of the colors and rough composition. I do intend to make the borders thinner and smaller to leave more room for the actual visuals.

I just wanted to know what everyone thought.
